Your function within the department
We are looking for a PhD student to join the Rowland laboratory. Your project will focus on the cycle of chromatin entrapment and release by the cohesin complex. Cohesin is a major player in many aspects of chromosome biology, including sister chromatid cohesion, transcriptional regulation, and DNA repair. Tight control of DNA entrapment by cohesin is essential for each of these processes, and misregulation can lead to developmental disorders and cancer.
Research in our lab is driven by fundamental questions that touch upon the essence of the cell cycle and chromosome biology: How does cohesin lock together the sister chromatids in S phase? How does cohesin structure chromosomes in interphase? And what triggers chromosome compaction in mitosis? We aim to address such questions using a combination of genetics, biochemistry and imaging, using both budding yeast and human cells as our model systems.
We offer a PhD studentship for an ambitious candidate with a passion for the cell cycle and/or chromosome biology. A background in molecular biology is essential, and experience with microscopy, genetics, biochemistry and/or bioinformatics is appreciated.

Your temporary employment will be for a period of at least four years. The gross salary per month will be from € 2.567,- to € 3.162,- according to the standard PhD scales. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the CAO Ziekenhuizen (Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals).
