DOCTORAL STUDENT (ESR5) for ‘In vitro anti-microbial functionality testing of developed formulations to be selected for in vivo studies’ in H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie ETN PRINT-AID

DOCTORAL STUDENT / EARLY STAGE RESEARCHER POSITION (ESR5) in Horizon2020 MSCA European Training Network ‘PRINT-AID: Development of personalized anti-infective medical devices combining printing technologies and antimicrobial functionality’

The position is for three years (36 months) starting in September 2017 or as agreed. There will be a four-month trial period, during which the PhD study right is to be applied for and got.

Doctoral training will be carried out at Professor Pia Vuorela’s multi-disciplinary research group at the University of Helsinki. The Research group (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/exploration-of-anti-infectives) offers training in the field of anti-infective drug discovery. The biofilm team of the group targets bacterial biofilms and has several well-established methods for testing compounds for anti-biofilm activity in vitro.

The successful candidate will evaluate surface microbicidal activity and release antimicrobial functionality of the 3D-printed or 3D- printed/coated surfaces containing antimicrobials that will be developed in the course of the PRINT-AID project. For that purpose different biofilm models will be applied. These studies will provide support to the fabrication process and it will allow determination of the best candidates of 3D- printed formulations for the in vivo studies. This doctoral project will be at the interface between the in vitro and the in vivo studies, and it will thus be crucial for the outcomes of PRINT-AID. The doctoral training includes an inter-sectoral secondment to Biosurface Technologies Corporation (http://biofilms.biz), Montana, United States, to perform bacterial adhesion tests using multiple biofilm reactors, such as the CDC reactor.

Requirements for the position are
– MSc degree in an appropriate field of life sciences (e.g. pharmacy, medicine, chemistry, biology).
– Knowledge of bacterial biofilms and pharmaceutical technology will be considered a benefit
– Strong motivation in pursuing doctoral studies
– Readiness to work in a highly multi-disciplinary research environment
– Fulfillment of H2020 MSCA eligibility criteria for the position (see below)

H2020 MSCA eligibility criteria:
Applicants shall, at the time of recruitment by the host organization, be in the first four years of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree that would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate.

H2020 MSCA Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization (Finland) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

We offer salary for three years based on H2020 MSCA ETN programme, consisting of Living and Mobility allowances. The candidates may also qualify for Family allowance depending of their family status. All standard pension benefits and occupational health care are provided for university employees.
