Open Post-doc position with 3000 Euro/month salary, GE­N­OMIC EX­PLOR­A­TION OF THE ORI­GIN OF EM­BRY­OPHYTES, University of Helisinki

The Department of Biosciences (www.helsinki.fi/biosciences) at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a three and half year


in an Academy of Finland funded project aiming to sequence complete genomes of Coleochaete orbicularis (basal streptophyte) and Blasia pusilla (basal embryophyte).

The postdoc will be in the pivotal position of this project based on collaboration between researchers in Australia (J. Bowman, Monash Univ.), Austria (F. Berger, Gregor Mendel Inst. Mol. Plant Biol.), Finland (P. Auvinen, E. Peltomaa, P. Poczai, J. Salojärvi, A. Schulman), Japan (M. Shimamura, Hiroshima Univ.), Scotland (Neil Bell, RBGE) and the USA (C. Delwiche, Univ. Maryland; W. Wheeler, AMNH). In practice, you will be working in the Viikki campus (www.helsinki.fi/en/viikki-campus) of the University of Helsinki but you are expected to actively interact and also visit our collaborators in other institutes/universities. You are expected to present new findings in scientific meetings and workshops, as well as act as a lead co-author of publications for international scientific journals.

Motivated persons with a suitable PhD degree are encouraged to apply. Prior expertise in NG sequencing and downstream data processing are a bonus but the most important asset of an applicant is the enthusiasm for research, motivation to learn new things, and ability to work independently while being an active member of an international network. English will be the working language of the project.

• contact details of two references (e.g. MSc/PhD thesis supervisors), and
• a letter (max. 1 page) with a description of your research interests and why you would be the best candidate for the project.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance with the overall salary amounting to approximately 3 000 €/month (gross). All standard pension benefits and occupational health care are provided for university employees. The work is scheduled to start by June 2017.
